December 12, 2008
12:00 noon to 4:00 PM
(Starts with lunch at 12:00 noon)
As a preconference event at the SMS Special Conference India hosted by the ISB in Hyderabad on December 12-14, 2008, the organizing committee is planning a Consultative Workshop for senior faculty members on "Mentoring Future Scholars: Challenges and Possibilities". The workshop is set for Dec 12, 2008 (Friday) to start with lunch at noon, and will continue until 4 pm. (Please note that there is a doctoral consortium and a faculty consortium that will be conducted as full day events parallel with this workshop).
The academic environment in business schools is going through a radical transformation. India is getting integrated globally. Business schools are also growing. There are new expectations of excellence in research along with all other teaching and service activities. This workshop will bring together senior faculty members who have the responsibility of nurturing junior faculty and doctoral students at business schools to explore the challenges confronting business schools and also consider some relevant best practices from India and abroad that can be transferred across countries.
For Whom
- Senior faculty members, departmental heads, heads of doctoral programs, and those who are engaged in guiding doctoral students and nurturing new faculty members in their research career.
- This will be an intensively interactive and consultative workshop. The number of participants will necessarily have to be restricted to 30. Participants will be required to pre-register for this workshop. There is no separate fee for pre registration for this workshop. However, registration for the main conference will be a pre requisite. Click here to learn more about registration.
Focal Issues
- How can we advance business scholarship in India? What are the pressures that come from India’s integration into the global economy on the business schools?
- What are the challenges for business schools in advancing research within the existing institutional environment? How do we overcome these challenges to develop scholars of international reputation?
- What are some ways to advance research productivity of the younger faculty? E.g.: Organizing writers’ workshops for publishing in scholarly journals, etc., creating peer review processes to provide helpful comments, Leveraging international conferences and association memberships, Building international linkages for faculty exchange, etc.
- How do we train doctoral students for an outstanding thesis and encourage them to publish during their doctoral studies?
- What are some personal challenges faced by senior scholars as they manage leadership and service responsibilities and the research and teaching activities?
Workshop Format
Since the workshop is intended for senior scholars, it will be primarily run in a consultative mode. Participants would be expected to bring their ideas and take part in plenary and breakout sessions. Each participant will be presenting his/her ideas as a short paper (3-6 pages long), which will be put together as a compendium for the workshop. We have four distinguished scholars who will facilitate the discussion. They will share their experiences and some ideas and present an interactive panel with the participants. There will also be breakout sessions on focal topics, followed by a presentation by each group. Each group will be facilitated by one of the facilitators below. The workshop will aim at developing a brief action plan to pursue for addressing the issues highlighted above.
